Sustainable agriculture is the driving force behind Big Boy Mushrooms. Northern California rice straw is pasteurized, then mixed by hand with inoculated oats right here in Sacramento County. Just a few weeks later, mushrooms are harvested and sold fresh at farmers markets a few miles away from the farm. We're the only mushroom farm in the region to use this natural process, which gives these incredible mushrooms a rich flavor that is unique to Sacramento.
At the end of the mushroom's life cycle, the composted straw is given to other Sacramento-area farmers for mulching and composting. By recycling our region's most abundant agricultural byproduct, we're closing Sacramento's food loop - and we invite you to join in the mycological revolution!
